About LCCREF

Founded in 1969 as the education and research arm of the civil rights coalition, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund (LCCREF) uses its research and education campaigns to promote an understanding of the need for national policies that support civil rights and social and economic justice. LCCREF initiatives are grounded in the belief that an informed public is more likely to support effective federal civil rights and social justice policies.

Through its public education campaigns on critical policy issues such as voting rights, judicial nominations, education reform, and affirmative action, LCCREF accentuates the vital relationship between the movement's storied past and contemporary civil rights issues. Our work presents the different perspectives of the constituencies of the coalition, thus providing policy makers, the press, and the public a broader context for the discussion of policy issues than would be available from any one organization.

Since its inception, LCCREF has produced educational materials, special reports, briefings, and curricula on a wide variety of civil rights issues. Its materials include daily and weekly email newsletters. In addition, LCCREF tracks legislation, court decisions, and executive branch enforcement of civil rights laws, and disseminates this information through the Civil Rights Monitor.

LCCREF also works with the Ad Council to produce public service announcements on issues of discrimination and to promote diversity. Our latest campaign, which educates viewers about their rights under federal fair housing laws, received the Ad Council's Golden Bell Award for the Best PSA of 2003.

LCCREF's award winning web site, CivilRights.org, serves as the site of record for relevant and up-to-the minute civil rights news and information, and a clearinghouse for coalition members' content. civilrights.org features the latest in information and media technologies, including searchable archives of news features and background information; audio and video streaming; and content aggregation, production and syndication services.

As we enter the third phase of a strategic assessment and reorganization, we are building the infrastructure to allow for the strengthening of our communications, public education and outreach, and research core functions. To support this growth, which is fundamental to the advancement of our mission, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund is reliant on foundation and corporate partnerships, as well as support from individuals. LCCREF is a 501(c)(3) organization and contributions are tax-deductible.
