Civil Rights Summer graduated its first class in August of 2001. Based on the feedback provided by the CRS 2001 Fellows, it was a life-transforming experience that left them committed to addressing civil rights and social justice issues throughout their lives.
In fact, the value of CRS may be best expressed in the words of past participants in the program:
"CRS has improved my analytical abilities and focus...Spending time on Capitol Hill and in the offices of CCCR and LCCR gave me invaluable and rare glimpses at the realities of the political process."
"I was very ill-equipped with the skills and knowledge essential for organizing and working with people...I gained confidence from the training CRS provided throughout the summer from talking with current leaders in the civil rights movement and talking with 20 other passionate and intelligent fellows."
"One of the most important things that I learned this summer was how to work directly with people whose views are different than mine-I learned that civil rights does not look the same to everybody and that's okay as long as we keep talking about it...I loved meeting and connecting with everyone."
