Background
On March 1, the automatic budget cuts known as “the sequester” went into effect. These massive cuts to the federal budget are set to devastate important programs such as education, child nutrition, environmental protection, housing, and many more vital services that we all depend on.
So what is the deal with the federal budget?
As he has done in the past, Rep. Paul Ryan, R. Wis., introduced a budget that we know will not work for the majority of Americans or for the economy. But this budget is even worse than what Ryan has offered before.
Not only does the Ryan budget cut services for low- and middle-income families, but this budget will actually cut taxes for the wealthiest from 39.6 percent to 25 percent. That means that wealthy individuals would be paying even less in taxes while the Affordable Care Act and programs like Medicare and SNAP could be eliminated, leaving millions of Americans uninsured and impoverished.
The Ryan budget is not just irresponsible fiscal policy, it aims to fulfill a radical vision of draining the federal government of precious resources and abandoning low- and middle-income families during tough economic times.
So what are our options?
