The Sikh Coalition, a community-based organization that works toward the realization of civil and human rights for all people, has launched “FlyRights,” a mobile phone application that provides a quick and easy way to report complaints of air travel discrimination in real time, right after the incident occurs.

Racial profiling is a dangerous and pervasive problem that affects people of color in their homes, at work, while driving, flying, walking, or doing anything in public. Since 9/11, the federal government has diverted massive investigatory resources on Arabs, Muslims and Sikhs, singling them out for questioning, detention, and other law enforcement activities based on their religion or ethnicity rather than their individual behaviors. Although the Sikh Coalition received hundreds of complaints of unfair treatment in our nation’s airports last year, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), received only 11 official complaints of improper TSA screening during the first two quarters of 2011. As a result, there has been little data to show the prevalence of racial profiling in U.S. airports.

This new phone application is a groundbreaking advancement to make it much easier for individuals who have been unfairly targeted to file a complaint with TSA and DHS immediately, and in real time. The app will significantly increase the number of complaints filed and thereby provide greater transparency on the extent of this problem in our nation’s airports. The first month it was released, the app was downloaded by over 10,000 users and has been used to file more than 35 detailed complaints of discrimination.

FlyRights will help change the reality of racial profiling in air travel. The Leadership Conference is proud to be a part of this cutting-edge effort to enhance the protection of civil and human rights with use of this new technology.
