Call Your Senators: Protect Consumers

Take Action Now: Call your senators toll-free at 866-544-7573 during the National Senate Call-In Week (March 1 – March 4) and tell them to support financial reform that holds Wall Street banks accountable, including the creation of a strong and independent Consumer Financial Protection Agency.

Late last year, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4173, the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2009, a bill that responds to the economic crisis by modernizing America's financial regulations while addressing many of the causes of the crises – from predatory lending to unregulated derivatives - that led to last year's meltdown.  A critical component of H.R. 4173 is the creation of a strong Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA) that would be established to protect consumers from discriminatory and predatory lending practices.

It is now time for the Senate to put an end to the abuses that led to the financial crisis.

The Senate needs to support a strong CFPA, a single agency that consumers can trust – one that will centralize and strengthen existing regulation, hold banks responsible for their lending practices, and fill in the gaps where existing laws have failed.

Millions of families continue to struggle to make ends meet, working tirelessly to stay afloat in a tepid economy, while many big businesses – despite receiving billions of dollars in aid from the federal government – continue to employ the same disreputable tactics that devastated our economic system.  In fact, Wall Street is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to stop reform.  Congress must take the necessary steps to assist the people suffering most in these trying economic times, and help safeguard families from unfair lending practices.  Anything less is unacceptable.
