On March 18, President Barack Obama nominated Tom Perez, the assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice (DOJ), to be the next U.S. Secretary of Labor. Perez is a highly qualified nominee; who, in addition to having a clear understanding of the complexities of his numerous positions in government, has made the well-being of everyday people a hallmark of his career.

Why Tom Perez as Secretary of Labor?

Perez’s esteemed career has always had an emphasis on protecting the civil and human rights of all Americans. In his tenure leading the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, Perez has shown commitment to upholding the constitutional rights of all Americans. His experience overseeing important investigations into worker discrimination will inform his future work as Secretary of Labor.

Perez has served as Maryland’s labor secretary and as a local elected official in Maryland. He has been a champion of voting rights, disability rights, and educational equity, and he has prosecuted some of the most heinous hate crimes in recent memory, while ramping up efforts to prosecute police misconduct.

Additionally, Perez settled the three largest fair lending cases in the history of the Fair Housing Act; as a result, the division recovered more money for victims of housing discrimination in 2012 than in the previous 23 years combined.
