Did you watch President Obama bring the U.S. House and Senate together for the State of the Union address? During his address, the president told members of Congress and the nation what he wants to achieve this year.
Now, Congress is charged with carrying out the president’s legislative priorities. As congressional leaders, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D. Nev.), and Speaker of the House John Boehner (R. Ohio) set the agenda for Congress and have the ability to put issues like comprehensive immigration reform, voting protections, and high-quality education for all students on the table.
We can’t predict what Congress will do this year, but one thing is for sure – Americans have had enough of a do-nothing Congress that has put partisan politics and political games over the best interests of the country.
This is a new year and Congress has the opportunity to do better than it did in 2011. It’s up to activists like you to demand that Congress promotes civil and human rights priorities this year.
