Call Your Senators: Protect Consumers
| Take Action Now: Thank you for urging your members of Congress to support the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Onward to the Senate! Look up your state's Senators here |
On December 11, the U.S. House of Representatives passed (223-202) H.R. 4173, the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2009, a bill that responds to the economic crisis by modernizing America's financial regulations while addressing many of the causes of the crisis – from predatory lending to unregulated derivatives. A critical component of H.R. 4173 is the creation of a strong Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA), which would help protect consumers from discriminatory and predatory lending practices.
None of this progress would have been possible without the countless calls and letters from thousands of people like you. However, there is still work to be done.
As our nation enters the new year, millions of families will struggle to make ends meet, while many big businesses – which have received billions of dollars in aid from the federal government – continue to employ the same disreputable tactics that so devastated our economic system. Congress must take the necessary steps to assist people suffering the most in these trying economic times, and help safeguard families from unfair lending practices.
The Senate needs to support a strong CFPA, a single agency that consumers can trust – one that will centralize and strengthen existing regulation, hold banks responsible for their lending practices, and fill in the gaps where existing laws have failed.
We urge you to continue to take action and call your senators at their in-state offices and urge support for the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2009 with a strong Consumer Financial Protection Agency.
