Tips on Calling Your Member of Congress

Stop by and Meet with Senators: Urge Support for the Hate Crimes Prevention Act

The Senate is currently considering The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act (S. 909), a bill that would provide significant improvements to our current hate crimes laws. This increased protection will help ethnic and racial groups that continue to be subjected to bias-motivated violence and intimidation.  Schedule a meeting or call your senators while they are home and urge their support for swift passage of S. 909 to fight hate crimes and provide safety and security for all people.
>>Meet with your senators during July 4 recess and urge their support for the Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

Call Your Senators: Support a Fast and Fair Confirmation Process for Judge Sonia Sotomayor

President Obama recently announced his nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to replace Justice David Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court. Sotomayor is a uniquely well-qualified nominee, with a sharp and independent mind and a record of excellence and integrity. Throughout her distinguished three-decade judicial career, Sotomayor has brought to the courts a common sense understanding of how laws impact the realities of people's daily lives.
>> Call your senators and urge their support for an orderly and fair confirmation process for this impressive nominee.

Call Senate Judiciary Committee Members:  Confirm Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Nominee Tom Perez

As Deputy Assistant Attorney General under President Clinton, Tom Perez was a vocal advocate for hate crimes legislation and fiercely promoted equal opportunities in education.  Perez understands the issues he will face in this important position, and is committed to securing and defending civil rights for all Americans.
>> Call Senate Judiciary Committee Member and urge them to confirm Assistant Attorney for Civil Right Nominee Tom Perez

Call Your Senators: Confirm Dawn Johsen as Head of the OLC

The Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) serves as a legal advisor to the White House and federal agencies within the Department of Justice. The OLC advises on a number of issues that directly affect our civil and human rights, such as voting rights, criminal justice, religious discrimination and immigration. Dawn Johsen knows what it takes to run the OLC, and through her work as a constitutional law professor she has proven her knowledge of the government's adherence to our constitutional rights. She will use her experience and knowledge to guide and advise our President and our federal agencies on integral decisions that impact our personal lives.
>> Call your senators and tell them to confirm Dawn Johnsen as head of the OLC to ensure our government's legal advisors are held to the highest level of integrity, from the top down.

Urge Your Representative to Support the D.C. House Voting Rights Act

Washington, D.C. residents pay federal income taxes and serve in the military, but do not have full-voting representation in the U.S. Congress.  The District of Columbia House Voting Rights Act (H.R. 157) will provide Washington, D.C. residents with a full-voting member in the House of Representatives for the first time in our nation’s history.
>> Call your representative and urge passage of the D.C. House Voting Rights Act.
