President Obama recently announced his nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to replace Justice David Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court. Sotomayor is a uniquely well-qualified nominee, with a sharp and independent mind, and a record of excellence and integrity.
Sotomayor would bring more federal judicial experience to the Supreme Court than any justice in 100 years, and more overall judicial experience than anyone confirmed for the Court in the past 70 years. Furthermore, throughout her distinguished three-decade judicial career, Sotomayor has brought to the courts a common sense understanding of how laws impact the realities of people's daily lives.
Sotomayor is also the first Latino nominated to the high court. She is a first-generation American and grew up in the South Bronx – fulfilling another of President Obama’s promises to add diversity of background to the Supreme Court.
