Take Action: Last month, Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) introduced the End Racial and Religious Profiling Act (ERRPA - S. 411). It is time to outlaw profiling on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity and sexual orientation. Call Senators (202-224-3121) and urge them to co-sponsor ERRPA.

Racial profiling is unjust. It must be outlawed.

By relying on stereotypes rather than proven investigative procedures, law enforcement agencies and officials harm innocent people.

When law enforcement targets communities based on stereotypes, they weaken their ability to correctly identify serious threats. Investigations are flawed because communities impacted by these stereotypes are unlikely to work with law enforcement agencies they do not trust, making us all less safe.

Prohibiting Profiling Based on Religion

Over the past 16 years, bills have been introduced in Congress to end discriminatory profiling. The passage of the End Racial and Religious Profiling Act (ERRPA) would help ensure that individuals are not stopped, investigated, detained or arrested based on illegal profiling. The bill would:

•    Ban discriminatory profiling by law enforcement at all levels;
•    Provide provisions for data collection and monitoring;
•    Include enhanced and funded training for law enforcement; and
•    Provide for sanctions and remedies for violations of the law.

It is time for Congress to act to end the discriminatory practice of profiling on the basis of race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation.
