Bill Name: Gulf Coast Hurricane Recovery Act of 2007
Bill Number: H.R. 1227
Issue: Poverty/Welfare
Date: 03/21/07
Roll Call No. 172
This bill provides comprehensive housing relief for the areas of the Gulf Coast affected by recent hurricanes.
The measure provides increased flexibility for already allocated funds and new oversight of existing problems, preserves public housing and assists evacuees with rental housing, and provides support for landlords and local communities who assisted evacuees with housing.
LCCR supported this bill, which was designed to mitigate the terrible impact of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma on vulnerable low-income victims.
Among other things, the bill would speed up the repair and rebuilding of homes and affordable rental housing to the displaced.
The bill would also ensure continued rental assistance for families that have moved back to their homes areas, as well as for families displaced by these hurricanes, and provide reimbursements to communities and landlords that were generous in providing assistance to hurricane evacuees in the aftermath of the storms.
Result: The House passed H.R. 1227 (302-125).
