Roll Call No. 485
During consideration of a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security, Rep. Tom Tancredo, R. Colo., offered an amendment that would prohibit any money in the bill from being spent on state or local governments if they have restrictions on sharing information with the federal government about an individual's immigration status.
LCCR opposed the amendment, as it would force state and local police officers to double as federal immigration agents, without providing them with the extensive training necessary for such a role.
It would also undermine law enforcement efforts, as undocumented immigrants would be far less likely to report crimes if they fear being turned over by local police to immigration authorities.
Rather than enact measures that treat hardworking immigrants like criminals, Congress should focus its efforts on enacting comprehensive immigration reform.
Result: The House agreed to the Tancredo amendment (234-189).
