Bill Name: Budget Resolution Fiscal Year 2009
Bill Number: S. Cong. Res. 70, Amend. 4222
Issue: Employment
Date: 03/13/08
Roll Call No. 58
During the Senate's consideration of the budget resolution, Sen. Lamar Alexander, R. Tenn., introduced an amendment that would effectively restrict the federal enforcement of the civil rights of language minorities.
Specifically, the amendment would take away the funding used by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for bringing enforcement actions against English-only rules in the workplace, regardless of whether the EEOC determined that an employer's English-only policy had no business justification at all.
LCCR opposed the amendment.
LCCR strongly supports robust EEOC enforcement of civil rights laws and the rights of limited English proficient individuals in the United States, including their right to be free from workplace discrimination.
Result: The Senate adopted the Alexander amendment (54-44).
