Bill Name: Emergency Extended Unemployment Compensation Act of 2008
Bill Number: H.R. 5749
Issue: Labor/Working Families
Date: 06/12/08
Roll Call No. 412
This bill would extend federal unemployment benefits for individuals who have exhausted their current 26 weeks of compensation.
It would provide an additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits, plus another 13 weeks of extended benefits in states with high unemployment rates. The extended benefit program would expire March 31, 2009.
LCCR supported the unemployment insurance benefits extension, which would provide badly needed assistance in a sinking economy. Today's families are burdened by soaring gas, food and medicine prices, and rising mortgages or rent.
Without even the minimal income that unemployment insurance benefits can provide, the risk to family stability, health, and safety are dangerously high.
Result: The House passed H.R. 5749 (274-137).
