Spotlight on 2012 Humphrey Honoree: Janet Murguía
May 8, 2012 - Posted by Tyler Lewis
On May 16, the civil and human rights community will honor Janet Murguía, president and CEO of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), with its highest honor: the Hubert H. Humphrey Civil and Human Rights Award. NCLR is the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S.
Murguía has devoted her career in public service to opening the door to the American Dream to millions of American families. Since taking the reins of NCLR in 2005, she has focused on promoting fair, accurate, and balanced portrayals of Latinos in the entertainment industry and working with corporate America to advance diversity in the workplace. She has also been a leader in developing alliances with other civil and human rights organizations and building Latino empowerment through civic engagement and voting.
As a national leader, Murguía has sought to strengthen the Latino voice on issues affecting the Hispanic community such as education, health care, immigration, civil rights, the economy, and the rise of hate rhetoric and hate crimes targeting the Latino community.
Prior to joining NCLR, Murguía worked as a staffer in Congress and then in the Clinton White House. She also worked for Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign.
Murguía currently sits on the board of directors of the American Heart Association and the Partnership for a Healthier America. She is an executive committee member of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and serves as the board chair for the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility.
