Voting Rights

Since 1972, when 18- to 21-years olds were first allowed to vote, electoral participation in that age group has been declining. While the public often attributes this apparent voter apathy to laziness, the reality is more closely linked to the alienation youth feel from the political process. Many students, especially students of color, have felt that politicians do not adequately represent their relevant interests. However, the decisions made everyday affect the present, where students now, and the future, where today's students will lead. It is crucial that student activists continue to put pressure on elected officials and increase efforts to raise awareness among other potential voters.
