Honorable Augustus Hawkins
Hawkins, California's first black congressman, served in the House of Representatives for nearly thirty years, as Chairman of the Committee on House Administration for two terms and a member of the Committee on Education and Labor, the Joint Committee on Printing and the Joint Committee on the Library. He is perhaps best known for co-sponsoring, along with Senator Hubert Humphrey, the piece of legislation known as Humphrey-Hawkins.


The Leadership Conference is working diligently to see that Tom Perez is confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Labor. Perez is an eminently qualified public servant and consensus builder who has dedicated his career to ensuring that all individuals are treated fairly and have the opportunity to succeed. He has served with integrity and distinction at the local, state and national level, compiling an outstanding record of achievement.
