LCCR Celebrates 25th Annual Hubert H. Humphrey Award Dinner
Feature Story by Read Scott Martin - 5/6/2002
This year’s Hubert H. Humphrey Civil Rights Award Dinner marks the 25th anniversary of the civil rights community’s most prestigious award. With the award, LCCR honors outstanding individuals whose “selfless and devoted service in the cause of equality” best exemplifies the spirit of Hubert H. Humphrey, Vice-President, Senator and outspoken civil rights pioneer.“We take particular pride,” said LCCR Executive Director Wade Henderson, “in saluting this year’s extraordinary honorees, Danny Glover, Elizabeth Birch, and David Saperstein." The May 8 event is LCCR’s principal annual fund-raiser. On behalf of LCCR’s executive committee, Wade Henderson extends a special word of thanks to dinner co-chairs Oliver Quinn, vice-president of Prudential Financial, and Kathy Bushkin, senior vice president of AOL Time Warner, as well as Underwriter Fred Fernandez, Corporate Relations Director of United Parcel Service. “These business leaders,” notes Henderson, “along with our many sponsors have shown unflagging support of the Leadership Conference, not only through their generosity, but through business practices that are exemplary of our civil rights values.”
The Dinner is noted for bringing together people from all walks of life -- members of both houses of Congress, officials from the Executive Branch, business leaders, educators, attorneys and young people representing the next generation of civil and human rights advocates. LCCR is especially reliant on financial support from committed individuals, corporations, and business and community leaders as the organization enters an era of program expansion and advocacy on a number of civil rights issues.

The Annual Hubert H. Humphrey Civil Rights Award Dinner will be held in conjunction with LCCR’s National Board Meeting on May 7, which features Sen. Jim Jeffords (I-VT) as a keynote luncheon speaker. The National Board meeting presents a unique forum for representatives from each LCCR member organization to discuss emerging civil and human rights policy issues, and review LCCR’s operations.
