Upcoming Civil Rights Award Dinner to Draw Nation's Largest Gathering of Civil Rights Organizations

Feature Story by civilrights.org staff - 4/29/2003

With the annual Hubert H. Humphrey Civil Rights Award Dinner approaching swiftly, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR) is preparing to celebrate the legacy of the former Vice President, Senator, and civil rights advocate who fought tirelessly for passage of the momentous Civil Rights Act of 1964.

This prestigious award, to be presented on May 7, 2003, is the civil rights community's highest honor, as it commemorates Hubert Humphrey's dedication to justice and equality and honors those who exemplify his passion for social justice.

This year, LCCR will pay tribute to: Representative John Lewis, a life-long champion of civil rights; Northwestern University's Medill Innocence Project and the Center on Wrongful Convictions, whose investigative efforts have changed the way the nation views the death penalty; and Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind "Sesame Street," whose educational media and research has taught the country how to respect and celebrate its diversity.

The Civil Rights Award Dinner is the largest annual gathering of civil rights advocates, bringing together more than 1,000 attendees --- members of Congress, business leaders, lawyers and educators, as well as representatives of the civil rights organizations that make up LCCR. Tickets are still available by clicking on /about/lccr/humphrey/registration03.html or phoning (202) 466-3311.
