What You Can Do

On June 12, 2009, the nation will switch from analog (over-the-air) television to digital television. More than 21 million households will be affected by this switch — most of whom are unaware of the switch and will need help making the transition.

Here's what you can do to help get everyone connected with digital TV.

1. Get your coupon now

If you currently use rabbit ears or a rooftop antenna to watch free over-the-air TV, you will need a converter box to receive the new digital TV signals after June 12, 2009.

Free coupons are available online at www.DTV2009.gov or by calling 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009). Please note that the toll-free number starts with 888, not 800. TTY users should call 1-877-530-2634.

2. Talk to people you know and help them get connected

Make sure your friends, family and neighbors know that TV goes digital on June 12, 2009. Tell them about the TV Converter Box Coupon Program — and offer to help them request their coupon and get their converter box.

If you have a blog, website, or MySpace page, you can display one of our DTV banner images.

3. Spread the word to your community

Help reach those who will be hardest hit by this transition.

  • Post flyers to community and office bulletin boards
  • Place announcements in newsletters, bulletins, and newspapers
  • Send postcards or emails to everyone in your address book
  • Give bookmarks out at your neighborhood school.

Check out our organizer toolkit to get coupon application forms and other free materials to hand out.

4. Attend or plan DTV education events

Identify meetings already scheduled in your community and offer to speak to the group about the DTV transition, or set up tables with DTV materials at events like conferences, fairs, and neighborhood festivals.

Or work with others to plan your own DTV transition event – maybe a DTV Transition 101 Educational Forum, Coupon Application Drive, or Converter Box Demonstration Event.

Visit our organizer toolkit page for resources to help you plan your event.
