Digital Television Transition Sample Letter to the Editor - Referencing a Recent Story/Editorial

Dear Editor:

[We/I] appreciate your recent article on the government-mandated change from analog to digital television that will occur next February [ref: article headline]. It explained the change that was coming, the benefits of the change, and how to get the free coupons for converter boxes for those who don’t have cable, satellite or one of the new digital television sets that will allow old televisions to continue to get the new signals.

But even more emphasis should have been put on the fact that people don’t have to buy a new television to receive the new digital signals.

This is especially important for seniors, those living on fixed incomes, minorities, and people with disabilities. These groups are statistically more likely to have over-the-air analog televisions that rely on rabbit ears or roof antennas for their reception.  Even if they know about the coupon program, they may feel pressured to buy a new digital television or sign up for an expensive satellite or cable subscription.

Coupons are free. All people need to do is request them. It’s easy; call 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009), 1-877-530-2634 (TTY), or get yours online at www.DTV2009.gov.

Sincerely,
