LCCR Calls on Candidates to Take a Stand on Proposition 54

Feature Story by Ritu Kelotra - August 14, 2003

Stressing the responsibility that Californians have in defeating California’s Proposition 54, Wade Henderson, executive director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR), called on California gubernatorial candidates to voice their positions on the initiative.

“Proposition 54 is a dangerous, deceptive and irresponsible initiative that is bad for health care, bad for public safety, and bad for education in the state of California,” Henderson said. “Voters, who will be asked to vote on this proposal on the October 7 ballot, have a right to know where each candidate stands.”

Proposition 54 is opposed by a coalition of health, business, civil rights, women’s rights, immigrant rights, religious, and labor organizations, representing a broad cross-section of the citizens of California. If passed, the initiative would hamper the state’s ability to address disparities by race in law enforcement, health care, education and discrimination.
