Americans Call for "No Extreme Supremes"

Feature Story by civilrights.org staff - 7/26/2005

Ordinary Americans are visually communicating their opposition to an extremist Supreme Court candidate through a new web site, www.NoExtremeSupremes.org.

The site is a project of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR), the nation's oldest, largest, and most diverse civil and human rights coalition.

LCCR has expressed serious concern with President Bush's nomination of Judge John Roberts to fill the Supreme Court seat of retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, voicing disappointment that the president "chose the politics of conflict and division over bipartisan consensus."

Wade Henderson, LCCR's executive director, said, "While Judge Roberts may not have been on James Dobson's short list of pre-approved nominees, let's be clear - John Roberts is no mainstream judge."

Henderson said, "NoExtremeSupremes.org allows ordinary Americans to show off their own slogans and signs demonstrating their opposition to blatantly extreme judicial nominees. Millions of Americans across the nation are concerned about the future of the Supreme Court and together, through our new website www.NoExtremeSupremes.org, they will send a message to Washington: "Fully Investigate John Roberts - No Extreme Supremes."

Visitors to the site can view pictures from Americans all over the country, send images to friends, upload their own images, and learn more about the upcoming debate on the nomination of John Roberts.

A sign from Pittsburgh calls for "Justice(s) for all," while another from St. Louis says "STL shouldn't have to yell for a justice that's swell!"
