Senate Passes DC Voting Rights ActToday, the Senate passed the DC House Voting Rights Act, which will give the District of Columbia a full-voting member in the House of Representatives for the first time. The House is expected to vote on the bill next week.LCCR Announces 2009 Hubert H. Humphrey Civil Rights Award Honorees
LCCR will honor Sheila Bair and Van Jones at its annual Hubert H. Humphrey Civil Rights Award Dinner, to be held on May 7, in Washington, D.C. Bair is chairman of the FDIC and during the current foreclosure crisis has worked to keep millions of Americans in their homes. Jones is president and founder of Green For All, which seeks to fight poverty and pollution at the same time by encouraging investment in jobs that promote a clean environment. States Integrate Black History into Public School CurriculaEvery year, students across the country celebrate Black History Month in a variety of ways, but a few states have passed laws that require public schools to include Black history in their curriculum throughout the year.
