19 Judicial Nominees Awaiting Confirmation. Twenty-three national organizations sent a letter this week to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urging them to work together to bring the nominations of 19 pending judicial nominees to the floor for a vote during the lame-duck session of Congress. The letter states that “We strongly believe that the continued obstruction of nominations would further poison the political atmosphere, needlessly heighten partisan tensions, and make it far more difficult for the federal government to serve the public interest.”

Jobs, Not Debt Reduction. The Washington Post’s Tom Hamburger reported this week on a recent meeting between civil rights leaders and a new “Fix the Debt” group that is lobbying for changes to Social Security and Medicare as part of a plan to reduce the federal budget deficit.  Following the meeting, civil rights leaders and advocates raised doubts about the urgency of debt reduction in the face of an ongoing jobs crisis. As Hamburger reports, Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, attended the meeting and said, “I don’t see the civil rights and labor communities signing on. […] People care far more about creating jobs than reducing the debt.”
