Responding to President Obama’s announcement yesterday of an executive order to halt deportation of DREAMers and allow them to apply for work permits, Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, said "Today is a good day for America. We applaud President Obama for his courageous and uplifting decision to enable these deserving youths to move from the shadows into the sunlight of our society." *** An "Abdication of the Senate’s Responsibility." Following the announcement from Senate Republican leaders that they will not confirm any of President Obama's nominees for federal circuit courts after June, Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference, said that "Establishing a blockade on the confirmation of federal appeals court nominees is an outrageous abdication of the Senate’s responsibility to our courts and everyone who depends on them." *** "A Highly Questionable Use of Congressional Authority." The decision by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to schedule a hearing to consider holding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress is doing "a serious disservice to the House and to the American people," Henderson said. "The record doesn’t support the extreme nature of this political maneuver. It’s a detour from the real business of the House and a highly questionable use of congressional authority." *** Ending Employment Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. Employment discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans occurs throughout the United States, advocates told members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee during a hearing thsi week on "Equality at Work: The Employment Non-Discrimination Act." The hearing also included testimony by Kylar Broadus, founder of Trans People of Color Coalition, who became the first transgender individual to testify before the U.S. Senate.
