Latest News"The Most Precious Civil Right in America." The Leadership Conference welcomed this week the introduction of the Voter Empowerment Act in Congress. The introduction of the Act "sends a powerful and timely message about the importance of eliminating barriers to voting and improving the administration of our elections," said Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference. "The ability to cast a vote and have that vote count is the most precious civil right in America." *** Predatory Prison Phone Rates. An unprecedented collection of civil rights groups and conservative leaders released a joint letter this week to the Federal Communications Commission calling for prison phone rate reform and an end to predatory phone rates. The letter is signed by conservative leaders such as Gary Bauer and David Keene, as well as civil rights groups such as The Leadership Conference, the NAACP, the National Council of La Raza, and the National Organization for Women. Common Cause, a government watchdog group, filed a lawsuit this week with the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., challenging the use of the filibuster in the Senate as unconstitutional. “Most Americans have lost confidence in Congress and its ability to act in the best interest of the American public,” Bob Edgar, president and CEO of Common Cause, said at a news conference announcing the lawsuit. *** A Long and Well-lived Life.
