Sen. Leahy Introduces Gideon’s Promise Act of 2013. As the Gideon v. Wainright ruling marks its 50th anniversary this year, there is a definite need to ensure that the constitutional right to be provided a lawyer is realized in practice for indigent defendants.

Anti-Death Penalty Win in Maryland. With the passage last week of a bill to repeal the death penalty, Maryland will become the sixth state to end capital punishment in the last six years and the first below the Mason-Dixon Line. Advocates – including the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (NCADP) and NAACP – are working to follow the victory with advocacy in other states.
