Westchester County New York to Build Affordable Housing for Minorities

Westchester County, New York, a county just north of New York City, agreed yesterday to build affordable housing for low-income people and minorities in predominantly White neighborhoods, as part of a settlement with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that could set a precedent for how the federal agency will pursue housing discrimination and fair housing enforcement.

National Health Center Week

This week is National Health Center Week, which was established to celebrate the work of community health centers that provide low-income people and those who lack access to health care with affordable and accessible primary and preventive care.  The National Association of Community Health Centers is working to provide 30 million more people with affordable and accessible health care by 2015.

Proposed Legislation Forbids Use of Credit Reports in Hiring

New legislation in Congress would prohibit employers from accessing potential employees' consumer credit reports for the purpose of making hiring decisions.  Currently 43 percent of employers use applicants' personal financial information in hiring, even though research has shown that credit history is not a good indicator of future job performance.
