Developing public policy for closing the digital divide and shaping the new digital communications and technology environment is an important component of the Digital Opportunity Partnership.
To date, the civil rights community has played a very limited role in the debates about ensuring that all segments of society are empowered to participate fully in the Digital Age. There is a real need for organizations representing under-served communities to participate at a much greater level in these discussions and to help ensure under-served communities are not left behind as the Information Age evolves.
The Communications and Technology Policy Initiative was developed to increase awareness and understanding of important emerging communications and technology policy matters; place these policies higher on the agenda of national civil rights organizations; and, support efforts in local communities to build diverse grassroots coalitions that will work to ensure that the interests of the under-served are represented in these debates.
The Communications and Technology Policy Initiative includes:
a baseline communications policy survey that determines the level and depth of the civil rights community's understanding of various communications policies;
an educational outreach campaign with the civil rights community, policy makers, the media and lay public;
development and distribution of a variety of materials on communications policies;
a community outreach and coalition building component in several regions around the country; and,
expansion of an online resource center on communications policies.
