LCCR Launches "Save Our Courts" Campaign
The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR) has launched a national “Save Our Courts” campaign to oppose the Bush administration's extremist nominees to the federal courts.
"Our freedoms are being threatened by extremist federal judicial nominees at the circuit and district court levels," said LCCR Executive Director Wade Henderson.
The campaign features a new web site, www.SaveOurCourts.org, the most comprehensive resource available on controversial nominations, which includes:
- Information about how the public can find out more about nominees, as well as get involved in the campaign to Save Our Courts;
- "Media Watch"-an interactive map of articles, editorials, and op-eds on judicial nominees and the federal courts;
- Grassroots training kits and other resources;
- "The Facts"-facts and information on the Bush administration's dangerous plan to pack the federal courts with extremists; and
- Links to other organizations involved in efforts to oppose many of Bush's judicial nominees.
In addition to the new web site, LCCR, in partnership with the Communications Consortium Media Center and Earthjustice, unveiled a new e-newsletter entitled, "Nominations in the News," which collects and disseminates news about President Bush's federal judicial nominations. Those interested in receiving the newsletter may sign up at http://ga3.org/Civilrights/join.tcl.
"The individuals charged with dispensing justice in our society have a direct impact on all of our rights, as well as on protecting the environment, workers, and consumers. Our federal judges-who are appointed for life-must be moderate, fair and impartial. What could be more important than saving our courts from extremist ideologues?" said Henderson.
Nancy Zirkin, LCCR Deputy Director, said, "If the Bush administration is successful in making lifetime appointments of the right-wing judges it has nominated, the civil rights of millions of Americans will be dramatically reduced."
