NCLR to Co-Sponsor National Day of Action on Welfare Reauthorization

Washington, D.C. - The National Council of La Raza, the largest national Latino civil rights organization, will participate in a news conference Tuesday, March 5 to kick off a National Day of Action to make poverty reduction the main focus of welfare reauthorization legislation. The news conference will be held at the U.S. Capitol beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Thousands of antipoverty advocates from around the country will be on Capitol Hill to discuss the legislation with lawmakers and to participate in a rally on the Mall, near Madison Drive between 9th and 10th Streets, starting at 1:00 p.m. Expected to attend the news conference are representatives from organizations that are members of the National Campaign for Jobs and Income Support, a coalition of more than 1000 grassroots antipoverty and civil rights organizations, including Linda Chavez-Thompson, Vice President of the AFL-CIO; Wade Henderson, Executive Director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights; and NCLR Vice President Cecilia Munoz. Also speaking is Innocencia Nolasco, a legal immigrant worker experiencing difficulties with the current welfare system.
