Congress Expected to Pursue DC Voting Rights Legislation Next Session

Tomorrow, Friday, September 30th at 12:30 pm, Congressman Tom Davis (R-VA) and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will headline UDC Law School's Election Reform Symposium. Wade Henderson, executive director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights and UDC Joseph L. Rauh Professor of Public Interest Law, will introduce Reps. Davis and Norton, who will advocate full voting rights for District residents.
Congressman Davis is sponsoring legislation that would, for the first time, provide residents of the District of Columbia with meaningful voting rights and give DC's representative in Congress full voting privileges. DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton will highlight the benefits of full representation for District citizens. Congress is expected to take up the issue of DC voting rights next session.
The denial of voting rights for DC's citizens has been a contentious political issue for decades. At the symposium, political advocates and legal scholars from both sides of the political spectrum will discuss how Congress has both the power and the responsibility to grant full representation to District residents.
