WASHINGTON, DC – Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement in advance of an expected Senate vote on the Murray Budget:
“This week, the House and Senate have considered two budgets that represent two utterly different mindsets about the role of government and the future of our nation.
The Senate budget is a sound and evenhanded approach to spending and revenues that will get our fiscal house in order while protecting the vulnerable, creating jobs, and building our infrastructure.
But the House budget seems to be aimed more at scoring political points, shredding safety nets, and starving parts of the government out of existence.
Low-income Americans and communities of color have borne the brunt of the recession and spending cuts, and will face so much more harm if the House budget is allowed to prevail.
We call on the Senate to pass the Murray budget. We hope the House will come to its senses and agree to the same approach.”
Nancy Zirkin is executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
