WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement after the announcement of a bipartisan Senate plan to reform immigration in the 113th Congress:

“Less than a month after one of the most divisive sessions of Congress in recent history, we are glad to see Republicans and Democrats working together in an effort to tackle one of our nation’s most difficult and pressing issues.

While immigration policy is incredibly complex, and we will have many, many questions about the details, today’s release of a bipartisan framework – one that includes a roadmap to citizenship -- is an important step forward in getting the process for reform moving again.

It has been six years since Congress last considered comprehensive immigration legislation. Our nation’s immigrants, our economy, and the American people have waited long enough. We look forward to working with Congress on legislation that allows immigrants contributing to our society to come out of the shadows, provides firm and fair enforcement, restores due process, keeps families intact, and protects the rights of both native-born and immigrant workers.”

Wade Henderson is the president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
