WASHINGTON –Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement in response to the passing of former U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Chair Jacqueline A. Berrien:

“The civil and human rights community has lost a great champion in Jacqueline Berrien, who dedicated her life to seeking justice and expanding opportunity for all Americans. Berrien was a thoughtful and visionary leader of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, building on the work that she accomplished as a member of three Leadership Conference organizations: the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and the American Civil Liberties Union.

We join with Berrien’s family, friends and colleagues in mourning her passing.”

Wade Henderson is president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States. The Leadership Conference works toward an America as good as its ideals. For more information on The Leadership Conference, visit www.civilrights.org.
