Young children are fascinated by different languages. These early years are a good time to expose them to many languages and to help them learn to enjoy and respect people whose language differs from their own. It's also a good opportunity to encourage children who speak a language other than English at home to feel good about themselves and their culture.
Family Affair

Goal:
To help children get a solid grounding in their own family's history, culture, and traditions

Materials:
Six sheets of paper per student (or three sheets, front and back)

Process:
For a wonderful take-home assignment that students can do with their families, let each child put together a "This Is My Family" booklet. The children are very creative, and they really enjoy sharing their projects with their classmates. Using one sheet per topic, students illustrate and write about each of the captions listed below:
  • Our family name
  • My family consists of
  • What my family does together
  • Special days my family celebrates
  • Special places we have visited
  • Our favorite trip or vacation
