Music is a universal language and a wonderful window into the similarities and differences between cultures. We encourage children to make music as well as to dance to it.
Sing-Along

Goal:
To parlay children's natural affinity for music into an opportunity to explore the world's languages and traditions

Materials:
Music-related books, tapes, or other items from sources such as Art Resources for Teachers and Students, Inc. (ARTS), 134 Henry Street, New York, NY 10002, 212-962-8231

Process:
Children are naturals when it comes to music. Our Spanish teacher taught the majority of her language concepts using music. It was amazing how easily my boys and girls caught on and how much Spanish they learned. This technique would work with other languages, too.

Obtain music from different cultures. Students can learn or memorize the lyrics for easy songs, or they can play instruments in rhythm with the beat. ARTS produces many fine items, such as a tape and book of children's songs in Chinese, and of Puerto Rican folk and traditional songs and games for children. Titles, accompanied by audiocassettes, include Canciones de Mi Isla/Songs from My Island, Juegos de Mi Isla/Games from My Island, and Chinese Folk Songs (see ARTS listing in Resources section). Another excellent resource is Dias de Poesia: Developing Literacy through Poetry and Folkfore, by Alma Flor Ada, which includes poetry, songs, games, and crafts for use throughout the year, plus companion audiocassettes (see Resources section).
