Seniors/Social Security
America's Social Security program is the nation's only subsidized family-protection program for all persons, regardless of race, class, age, and gender. Social Security provides retirement and disability insurance benefits for qualified workers and their dependents, as well as benefits for survivors of deceased workers.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of more than 200 organizations, is calling on Congress to reject the Fiscal Year 2012 budget resolution put forward by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI).
"The Ryan budget makes cuts that are extreme and irresponsible, slashing or eliminating
many services that are needed by communities represented by The Leadership Conference,
including vulnerable and low-income people such as young children, students, older people,
the jobless, and the uninsured," said Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference, and Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president, in a letter to members of Congress.

Congress introduced a bill today in both the Senate and the House of Representatives that will fix the Supreme Court's recent decision in Gross v. FBL Financial Services Inc., which seriously undermined employment protections for older workers.
"The Court's ruling is fundamentally unfair because it makes it nearly impossible for older workers to prove they've been the victim of age discrimination. It also opens the door to eroding the rights of all workers, regardless of their age – a price that American workers cannot afford," Wade Henderson, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, said.
The Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act will restore the rights of older workers facing age discrimination to what it has been for decades and will ensure a consistent standard for all employees facing employment discrimination or retaliation.
"Congress should move swiftly to restore fairness in the workplace and pass the Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act," Henderson said.

On August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, providing benefits for the elderly, women and children who had lost their family incomes, people with disabilities, and unemployed people. The Act was part of his New Deal, a broad plan to reform American society and relieve the hardships of the Great Depression.
During the Great Depression, the unemployment rate skyrocketed and the banking system collapsed, leaving many people with no means of support. In 1933, 25 percent of all American workers were unemployed, up from three percent in 1929, and over 40 percent of banks in the United States closed.
As banks failed, people's life savings were lost. From 1930 to 1933, nine million savings accounts were completely wiped out and approximately 1.3 billion dollars -- about 16.8 billion in today's dollars -- were lost.
